Previously from: Lincoln, NE… Middlebury, VT… Flagstaff, AZ… then Lincoln, NE again… I came out to Boulder for a weekend in June 2012 and never left!
Personal Motto/Inspiration: When things get really tough in a workout or race, my mantra is “Strong. Fit. Fierce.” It’s also been reported to me that really hard hills make me grunt “Amandaaaaaa” under my breath. I will neither confirm nor deny those reports.
How long have you been a runner? I started running cross country in 7th grade because a cute 8th grade boy ran. The boy never noticed me, but I’ve stuck with it. I first fell in love with trails on the Arizona Trail when I lived in Flagstaff, AZ. I just felt so free with dirt under my feet!
Happiest running moment: After finally breaking up with the track for good, I entered the 10k at the 2014 GoPro Mountain Games on a lark. As we ran up the first black diamond ski slope, I was struck both by how supportive all the runners were of one another and how gorgeous the views were. It was the hardest thing I had ever done and I couldn’t stop smiling!
Proudest running accomplishment: I went through a lot of injuries and heartbreak to get to the starting line of my first marathon. I wasn’t even convinced I’d actually finish until I could see the finish line with my own eyes. Running into that stadium in Toledo, OH, after the many months of hard work, I couldn’t hold back the tears. I did it!
Favorite local running route: Either the loop at Walker Ranch or the Fowler Trail.
Favorite distance: In a former life, I was a steeplechaser, but running in circles got me injured too many times. I’m still trying to figure out my favorite distance, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed my first marathon.
Favorite race: I’m sure that as I spend more time racing through the mountains I’ll discover some pretty rad races, but for now my favorite is either the Spring Runoff Trail 10km at the GoPro Mountain Games in Vail or the Running on Thin Air trail half marathon in Red Feather Lakes, CO.
If you could lace up your shoes and go for a run anywhere in the world right now, where would you go? I’d just love to have my mom at one more race, no matter where that might be. I miss having my biggest fan on the sidelines.
Goals: My two major goals are pretty far out there, but I like to dream big. I’m training to earn a spot on the US Mountain Running Team and run a qualifying time for the US Olympic Trials in the marathon.
When I’m not running I’m… working as a legal assistant to a veterans’ attorney, trying to help our disabled military veterans get the compensation they deserve from the VA after serving our country.
Uphills or Downhills? I’m definitely more of a fan of uphills. I prefer a good grind over barreling out of control down a hill.
Favorite post-run beer: Casual Friday stout from The Mountain Sun or Nitro Milk Stout from Lefthand Brewing
I am a Rocky Mountain Runner because… it’s the most fantastically crazy and wonderfully welcoming group of runners I’ve ever encountered. I’m so grateful they let me tag along on adventures!
Bonus: Every time I go for a run with RMR, I’m reminded that Kea is my spirit animal.
